Imagine creating a software product and you are using the product without a Copyright Protection and sooner you find that someone else has copied the source codes and brought up the same product and have been receiving monetary benefits. There is virtually nothing you could do about it; there is no proof of sole ownership, which however could have been avoided entirely if you had taken preliminary action in gaining a Copyright of your work…
Copyright is an automatic right which protects your work and prevents anyone else from copying it. Copyright doesn’t protect ideas, only the work itself when complete and some examples include:

e. Recordings of a work including sound and film

What is the necessity of taking Copyright Registration?
Copyright is necessary so that you can protect your work from infringers who have fraudulent intention to take advantage of the work you have created. Copyright protection provides exclusive right over your mark.
Eg: Copyright Law for Plagiarism
In Ratna Sagar (P) Ltd. v. Trisea Publications & Ors., 1996 PTC (16) 597, the claimant, a top publisher of children’s’ educational books LIVING SCIENCE sued defendant, who happened to be the publisher of a book UNIQUE SCIENCE for infringing its copyrights. The plaintiff claimed that the defendant had copied material from the former’s book. The court after comparing the two publications held that the defendant was guilty of copyright infringement and granted the latter permanent injunction.
Copyright registration procedure
a. Application for registration of the work is made in the Copyright Office, including all the statement of particulars.
b. Each work will be filed in separate applications.
c. Each application will be filed with separate application fees as prescribed.
d. Applications must be signed by the applicant or representing Attorney.
Copyright classification
Copyright Work is classified as Literary, Dramatic, Artistic, Musical, Producers of Cinematograph films and Sound recordings. In India Software programmes is also protected under Copyright.
